Cosy up This Halloween with These TV Specials

The time has come for pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating. While many teens and young children will be going around the neighbourhood with baskets full of candy, we mere twenty-somethings will be spending Halloween in the company of good friends, scary movies and glasses of wine (or pumpkin spiced latte).

To make your movie fest (or in this case, TV fest) extra special, here are ten Halloween themed TV episodes I think you should watch/re-watch:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Fear Itself

Kicking off the video fest with horror, we begin with Buffy. Naturally. Fear Itself is a great example of an episode of Buffy which brings equally as much horror as it does comedy. Buffy is still depressed over Parker, Willow worries she can’t handle deeper levels of magic and Xander feels left out for not going to college like the rest of his friends. The group decide to go to a Halloween party only to find that things aren’t as they seem. With fears and insecurities already nagging at them, it’s no surprise that they find themselves confronting their worst nightmare.

The best part: Anya showing up dressed as a bunny rabbit.

The Vampire Diaries –  Haunted

This episode sees Vicky transitioning into a vampire. Damon deals with it the only way he knows how – by letting her have some ‘harmless’ fun. And what could possibly go wrong with that? Meanwhile Matt and Jeremy wonder where Vicky’s been and Elena worrying about her little brother, decides it would be a good idea to drag him along to the Halloween party at the school. Much to her horror, Vicky shows up on campus, a ticking timebomb, and it’s only a matter of time until she goes off. This episode has plenty  of tricks and treats to go around.

The best part: Elena having to lie to Matt even though it hurts her. This moment breaks my heart.

Supernatural – It’s The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester

Who doesn’t love a good Supernatural episode and this comes in the form of Halloween. Dean is still plagued with visions of hell, but the brothers have a job to do and that job is to stop a demon named Samhain from being unleashed. Will they make it on time or will Sam have to resort to using his demonic powers? It’s a roller-coaster ride filled with demons, angels and mayhem.

The best part: The astronaut. Duh. And Dean gorging on candy. Cracks me up.

American Horror Story – Halloween Pt 1 and 2

If you’re looking for something to really make your skin crawl and make you want to gouge out your eyes this Hallow’s Eve, American Horror Story ought to do the trick. The series as a whole is terrifying but this particular episode stands out and just happens to revolve around Halloween. The plot continues to unravel bringing the character’s worst nightmares to haunt them as new truths come to light and with dire consequences. This is not for the faint-hearted.

Transitioning to comedy…

Angel – Life Of A Party

Sure, we love serious Angel with its drama and heart-wrenching moments that make us reach for the tissues but we also love a good comedy, especially in the form of Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, because it is utterly hilarious. So grab your tissues and get ready to cry your eyes out (with laughter this time) because Gunn is peeing everywhere, Wesley and Fred are drunk, Angel just can’t get enough of Eve and Spike is being positive? Humour, drama, confusion and a demon who just wants to party, all in the name of Halloween. This is an episode like no other and you do not want to miss it.

The best part: Drunk Wesley and Fred.

Big Bang Theory – The Middle Earth Paradigm

Now for some light TV. Penny invites the group to her Halloween bash which they are more than happy to attend as they get to dress up. Leonard in particular relishes at the opportunity to make an impression. Unfortunately, Penny’s old boyfriend shows up to get in the way of his affections. This episode has plenty of humour with Howard dressed as Peter Pan – I mean Robin Hood, Raj as Thor (or ‘Tor’), Leonard as a hobbit, Penny as a cat, and of course who could forget the ever entertaining Sheldon as the Doppler Effect.

The best part: When Leonard says, “That’s how we roll in the shire.”

Friends – The One With The Halloween Party

You can’t go wrong with a classic and you certainly can’t get more laughs than this one which sees Monica dressed up as Catwoman, Pheobe as Supergirl, Ross as Sputnik who keeps being mistaken for Doody and Chandler as an odd yet somewhat adorable bunny rabbit. Rachel hands out candy honing her maternal instincts, Pheobe bumps into Ursula and Chandler and Ross end up in an arm wrestle. It’s the perfect way to end your TV fest.

The best part: Ross dressed as a potato.

Okay so my choice of Halloween themed episodes to watch may be a bit biased, considering my list is from shows I enjoy, but hey, you may find yourself discovering new TV favourites.

Whatever you decide, these Halloween specials are definitely worth a watch. Have a terrifyingly awesome Hallow’s Eve!

XO. Nina.
